Matthew King Obituary

 

Matthew John King Sr., a lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe, passed away Monday evening, November 22, 2021 surrounded by family at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Salisbury Township.   He was the husband of Marcia King who passed away in September 2015.

Born on April 23, 1944. He was the son of John King and Hannah Tobin Buttles.

He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam conflict from 1963-1967 as a member of the UDT Beach Jumper Team 11.

Matt worked in the Insurance and Personal Care Services Industries for most of his working life, most recently with United Security Assurance and Americare Services until retiring.

Wanting to continue to serve our great nation later in life, he enlisted in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and over his period of service was promoted several times to his present rank of Commander, Matt was a Post Commander and member of American Legion Post 304, past Commander and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8067, he volunteered as an offertory collector at Immaculate Conception Church in Jim Thorpe, he also served as a member of the Fairview Hose Company, 40&8 Association, Lehighton Ambulance Association, Ancient Order of the Hibernians, US Naval Academy Alumni Association, Knights of Columbus and many other organizations that he was actively engaged in during his lifetime.

He is survived by his two children Matthew King Jr. and his wife Christine King of Maryland and Marcia Miller and her husband Michael Miller of Jim Thorpe. He has five grandchildren: Hannah King, Marinn King. George Swartz, Michelle Miller and Megan Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 2nd, at 10AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jim Thorpe.  Internment will be in the parish cemetery. Calling hour 9AM until the time of Mass in church.
